I've collecting information in every statistical aspects. In this topic I'm deliberately curious of what is the prostitution statistics in the world. And I know there are many people like-minded who are similarly curious of what is statistically globally current status of prostitution. And for those who are wanting for this information, perhaps this research will be useful.
Before that let us know the meaning of prostitution and where did it begin?
Prostitution and trafficking of women and children is the third largest income-earner globally. The only two bigger are drug trafficking and arms sales." (source: Jonathan Nambu, 'Samaritana Bulletin' 1996)
According to Encyclopedia of Public Health, prostitution is defined as "the act or practice of engaging in sexual activity for money or its equivalent" (Garner 1999, p. 1238). Except for parts of Nevada, it is a criminal act in the United States. Prostitutes are also referred to as commercial or public sex workers. It is estimated that over 92,000 men, women, and juveniles are arrested yearly for prostitution (FBI, 2000). The number of juveniles engaging in prostitution is estimated at between 100,000 and 300,000 per year.
According to the paper entitled "Estimating the prevalence and career longevity of prostitute women" (Potterat et al., 1990), the number of full-time equivalent prostitutes in a typical area in the United States (Colorado Springs, CO, during 1970–1988) is estimated at 23 per 100,000 population (0.023%), of which fraction some 4% were under 18. The length of these prostitutes' working careers was estimated at a mean of 5 years.
A 1994 study found that 16 percent of 18 to 59-year-old men in a U.S. survey group had paid for sex (Gagnon, Laumann, and Kolata 1994).
Prostitution is often the gateway crime for women (Chesney-Lind, 1997). It has been reported that 70% of female inmates in American prisons were initially arrested for prostitution (Boyer & James, 1983, p. 131). Currently one in three women in jails today were arrested for prostitution; 7 in 10 women imprisoned for felonies were initially arrested for prostitution (Flowers, 1998, p.8).
In Canada, the prostitution statistics as recorded on criminal code and other federal statute incidents reported to police are 5,103 with a rate of 16.4.
Netherlands Institute of Social Sexological Research, Utrecht, the study entitled "Factors influencing safe sex in heterosexual prostitution", out of 218 respondents, the prostitutes have been identified as either consequent protectors (78%), selective risk takers (11%) or risk takers (11%). Clients have been identified as either consequent (70%), defaulting (6%), selective (11%), unconcerned (8%) or recalcitrant protectors (5%).
40,000 of the 100,000 prostitutes in Bangkok are 14 or younger. In Sri Lanka, researchers believe there are at least 10,000 boy prostitutes, receiving as little as one dollar per day.
I've have visited icasa.org and their statistic result of a certain survey were the following:
ADULTS
One million women and girls work as prostitutes. 1% of US women have worked as prostitutes at some point, with four years being an average length of career. There are 100,000 arrests annually for prostitution. Of women held at the Cook County Jail during a one-year period, about 75% were first arrested for prostitution. Of women held at the Cook County Jail in October 2001 and charged with non-violent offenses, 34% were regularly involved in some form of prostitution.
CHILDREN
500,000 to 1.2 million children are involved in child prostitution. There are at least 300,000 male prostitutes under age 16. Between 300,000 and 400,000 American children and youth are victimized by sexual exploitation each year. In one study, 1/3 of the women entered prostitution before the age of 15, and 62% of the sample were in prostitution before their 18th birthdays.
Most children enter prostitution at the age of 14. 60% of child prostitutes are first recruited by peers. 96% of prostitutes who entered prostitution as juveniles were runaways. Most stated they had no other option for making money.
ECONOMICS
Approximately 14% of the gross domestic product of Thailand (U.S. $27 billion per year) was supplied by sex businesses.
In the Netherlands, prostitution is a $1 billion per year industry.
MALES
27% of juvenile male prostitutes are involved in the pornography industry.
Male prostitutes are much less likely to be arrested for prostitution than females.
RACE
40% of street prostitutes are women of color; 55% of those arrested are women of color; 85% of prostitutes sentenced to jail time are women of color.
I hope that this information would be somehow help your knowledge and information about the "Statistics of Prostitution". I apologized I cannot get entirely the actual statistical information in prostitution in the whole world.
